Board Member Biography Statements

The 2008-2009 Hutch Kids Board of Directors are:

Kathy Briant
Secretary

I have been working with the NCI's Cancer Information Service at the Hutch for almost seven years. My daughter Elliana joined Hutch Kids in October 2006. I had heard about Hutch Kids' excellent reputation long before she was born and I felt like I had won the lottery the day I got the call to let me know there was an opening.

This is my third year on the Hutch Kids Board of Directors.  Over the past two years, I coordinated Staff Appreciation Week and the Welcome Committee Program for new families joining Hutch Kids and have served as the Board Secretary.

Because Hutch Kids is such a big part of my daughter's life, I welcome the opportunity to serve on the Board to work in partnership with other parents and Hutch Kids staff to carry out Hutch Kids' mission.  The 2008-2009 Board worked hard with administrative staff to submit a proposal that resulted in Hutch Kids staying as the FHCRC/SCCA on-site daycare provider.  Over the coming year, I look forward to partnering with the Hutch Kids community to plan and work towards long-term sustainability of Hutch Kids as it transitions to independence from FHCRC.

Liz Briesemeister

My daughter, Zoe, has been a Hutch Kid since she was 4 months old.  I have served on the board for the past 2 years and would like to continue to do so.  I initially joined the board because of my interest in working to improve communications between the board, the staff and parents.  In my first year on the board, I joined the New Host Family Committee (now called the Welcome Committee) and helped refine the information presented about and by this group, as well as the process it uses to connect with new families.  This past year, I chaired the Social Committee, which put on a successful Home Harvest Festival, enhanced with more entertainment and activities for kids.

I am proud to have been a part of the incredible board effort that helped saved Hutch Kids!  There is much more work to be done by the board to effectively adapt to our new reality.  In this work, I have been and will continue to be an advocate for more transparency and more timely communication from the board to staff and parents.

Mark Jackson
Treasurer

I am Mark Jackson and have three energetic children currently at Hutch Kids - Harry (summer camper), Katherine (Trailblazer), and Sara (Rainforest Kid).  I appreciate the wonderful environment that's been established at Hutch Kids.  Hutch Kids has been a great experience for our kids at every stage of their development from 4 months to 5 years old.

The energy and the ability of the staff speaks for itself and is a huge asset in enabling Hutch Kids to become so successful.  I would like to serve on the board to help continue making Hutch Kids a wonderful place for kids to go and for staff to work.

I currently work at Avtech, a small aerospace manufacturing company in Wallingford.  I have 10+ years of experience working in Finance and Accounting and have been involved in a number of process improvement projects for large companies.  I have served on the Board of Directors for the University YMCA in Seattle and have an MBA in Finance.

Lisa Johnson

I have worked with the CERC group (Cancer Epidemiology Research Cooperative) in PHS at the Hutch since 1995.  I am mom to exuberant three-year old Nathaniel Johnson, who is currently in the Wildflowers class and joined Hutch Kids as an infant.

Nathaniel has benefited in so many ways from his time at Hutch Kids, and I love being able to give back to HKCC for the tremendous impact it has had on our family. I look forward to being able to help HKCC continue to make changes to accommodate the needs of the kids and parents--continuing the work of the food committee, being responsive and proactive about issues raised by parents, encouraging active engagement of families, and doing what we can to retain and show appreciation for the wonderful teachers and staff who play a huge part in making HKCC the place it is.

Steve Johnson
Vice-President

My name is Steve Johnson and we have one child currently at Hutch Kids (Rowan) and one Hutch Kids alum (Olivia).  I am dedicated to helping the staff and administrators do what they do best - provide a nurturing and supportive environment for all of our children.

I have served on the board the past 4 years, most recently as Board President. I have found that serving on the board for multiple terms provides continuity and allows the board to plan for and accomplish long-term projects.

Emily Li

I am the mother of Fino, (formerly at HK), and Ani, a Starfish.

I have been on the board for 3 years and have chaired and served on the Food and Playground Committees.  I started the Food Committee and have continued to work on the committee to improve the quality of snacks.

As the chair and now co-chair of the Playground Committee I have been working towards new playground space.  I hope that my experience as an architect and contractor will be helpful in this process as the new playground is designed and plans are implemented in the coming year.

The entire board has invested a great deal of time and energy during this transition to independence for Hutch Kids.  My hope is for the Board to continue to become stronger and more effective to improve Hutch Kids and the Hutch Kids community.

Jennifer Mahlum

My name is Jennifer Mahlum and I have been an accountant in the Finance Department at the Hutch for almost 12 years.  My daughter Emily is in the Wildflowers classroom.  She is 3 years old and loves Hutch Kids.

I have been a board member for the past two years.  This past year I was in charge of Staff Appreciation and served on the Social Committee which planned a successful Home Harvest Festival.  Since Hutch Kids was successfully chosen as the vendor to run on-site daycare for the Hutchinson Center, I have part of a newly formed Finance/Accounting Committee.

As a member of the team that helped save Hutch Kids from being run by a for-profit daycare company, I have a vested interest in continuing to serve on the Board as Hutch Kids begins its transition towards independence from the Hutchinson Center.  I would like ensure that Hutch Kids retains its high quality childcare while remaining a fiscally responsible and viable corporation.  I also believe it's important that we retain our high quality of staff and provide an excellent working environment for these caring and dedicated individuals who take such wonderful care of our children.  Thank you for your consideration.
