Policy on salary advances changes

General Article

April 5, 2001

Effective May 1, the process for requesting and receiving a salary advance will change as follows:

Salary advances may be requested through Thursday at 3 p.m. Checks will be available for pick-up in Human Resources at 10 a.m. the Friday of the same week.

Advances will be available all months except January due to year-end processing and will be limited to two per calendar year.

The policy remains that the Center realizes that during the course of employment, unusual circumstances may arise that could cause short-term financial hardship for a staff members that could be alleviated or lessened by the granting of a salary advance.

In recognition of this:

Salary advances may be granted in cases of serious financial emergency caused by an unusual event that is unlikely to occur again.

The amount of the advance will be limited to the amount of salary the employee has earned up to the date that the advance is issued and will include 80 percent of his/her eligible earnings (20 percent is deducted for estimated taxes).

The employee's regular paycheck will be reduced by the amount of the advance.

The last date for requesting a salary advance is the Time and Effort card deadline each month.

Requests for salary advances must be made before the Time and Effort card due date to be honored. Requests for salary advances should be directed to Human Resources.
