Ten high school students from Hutch School, including patient family members and one patient, delved into the science of transplantation biology last month with hands-on laboratory work in a field trip to the Hutch's Teaching Laboratory.
Students isolated their own cheek-cell DNA, examined chromosomes from normal and cancer cells and had lunch with scientists.
"Not only was this an opportunity for the students to do some activities they can't do in their own schools, it really gave them a much greater relationship with the Hutch," said Hutch School teacher Teri Hein. "The kids were talking about their experiences for days after the event."
HutchLab, an offshoot of the Science Education Partnership, offers one-day field trips for high school science classes as well as one-week summer sessions. The Hutch School meets the educational needs of school-aged patients and family members of patients.
