Scientists in the Hutch's Breast Cancer Research Program will apply for a multimillion dollar research grant from the National Cancer Institute to conduct translational research in the prevention, detection and treatment of a disease that affects one in eight women during the course of her lifetime.
An NCI Specialized Program of Research Excellence - SPORE - is a multidisciplinary project that supports the interaction of basic and applied scientists to promote rapid advances in cancer treatment.
(See http://deainfo.nci.nih.gov/awards/spore.htm.)
Dr. Peggy Porter, breast-cancer program head, and members of the program's executive committee are in the early stages of developing projects and resources for a SPORE grant application to NCI in February 2002.
The SPORE allows for four or five multisdisciplinary projects, several smaller projects and integrated cores that provide resources for the project. A resource for the procurement of fresh tissue is a required element of the SPORE proposal.
Porter and colleagues are actively soliciting draft proposals from researchers with novel ideas or projects that would benefit from new collaborations. All ideas are welcome, including those from investigators not currently working on breast cancer.
The SPORE will have a strong career development component and young investigators are encouraged to make proposals and requests for collaboration.
Limited pilot-project funds will be available for the generation of necessary preliminary data.
Proposals and inquiries should be directed to Dr. Peggy Porter, mailstop C1-015 (UW Box 358080), Ext. 3751, fax: Ext. 5815, e-mail pporter@fhcrc.org.
If you are not submitting a proposal but would like to be on a distribution list for meetings, e-mail Sherrill Bennington at sbenning@fhcrc.org .
Proposal ideas of one to two pages should include:
