International

BBC Radio (international) and CBC Network Radio (Canada) interviewed Dr. Art Peterson (PHS) about the results of the Hutchinson Smoking Prevention Project, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The Globe & Mail, Canada's largest daily newspaper, also ran a front-page story about the study. Nationally, Peterson did interviews with the Associated Press, Reuters, Newsday, the Washington Post, HealthSCOUT, AP Radio and CBS Network News, among others. National coverage also included segments on National Public Radio, NBC's "Today Show," CNN, Fox Network News, and stories on more than two dozen network TV affiliates nationwide. Local coverage included front-page stories in the Seattle Times and Seattle Post-Intelligencer, as well as articles in the Seattle Union Record and News Tribune (Tacoma). Local TV and radio coverage was extensive; a highlight included Peterson's appearance as a guest on KUOW-FM's "Weekday," a public-affairs talk show.

Oncology News International ran an article on the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) announcement of a $29 million award for the first year of the nationwide HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Dr. Larry Corey (Clinical Research) will lead the trial.

ReutersHealth.com ran an article on Dr. Laurence Cooper's (Clinical Research) research on the use of T-cell receptor genes specific for HIV into CD8 cytotoxic T cells (CTLs) and the importance of the CTL response in HIV.

National

MSNBC.com interviewed Dr. Anne McTiernan (PHS) about a book she wrote called "Breast Fitness: An Optimal Exercise and Health Plan for Reducing Your Risk of Breast Cancer." McTiernan also participated in a live chat on the MSNBC Web site. Locally, the Tacoma News Tribune ran a feature story about the book, which was picked up by papers throughout the West Coast. KING-TV, KIRO-TV and KOMO-TV interviewed McTiernan about the book, and a story also ran on Northwest Cable News. A blurb about the book also appeared in the fitness column of the Seattle Times Pacific Northwest magazine.

Coping magazine featured an article written by Dr. E. Donnall Thomas and Dottie Thomas (Clinical Research) regarding the advances in hematopoietic cell transplantation. The article featured a photo of the Thomas' with transplant survivors at a patient reunion in August 2000.

The Wall Street Journal interviewed Larry Feder (Development) for an article about teaching the younger generation the art of giving. The article also appeared on the Dow Jones News Service.

WOR Radio's Phil Lempert interviewed Dr. Ruth Patterson (PHS) for a nationally syndicated show called "Shopping Smart." She discussed findings of a recent Center study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, which found moderate consumption of olestra-containing snacks is associated with lower serum cholesterol and fat intake. Entertainment Today magazine also picked up the story, which received extensive media coverage locally and nationwide.

Puget Sound

Seattle Times columnist Jean Godden, in two separate columns, mentioned Ted Kennedy Jr.'s keynote speech at the Center's recent 25th anniversary luncheon. KOMO-TV, KCPQ-TV, KING-TV, KIRO-AM and KOMO-AM also reported on Kennedy's involvement in the Center's birthday festivities.

The Seattle Times devoted a science page to an article featuring the work of Dr. Steve Henikoff and graduate student Claire McCallum (Basic Sciences). The story was prompted by the Center's recent $1.2 million NSF grant to study plant genetics.
