PHS' Farwell award goes to Gwen Glaefke, 28-year veteran

It's hard to find someone who has worked in the Public Health Sciences Division longer than its director, Dr. Ross Prentice. But nominators for the PHS' Margaret T. Farwell Outstanding Staff Career Contributions Award did just that this spring, selecting Gwen Glaefke, coordinating-center manager for SCHARP.

Glaefke, who has worked for PHS since June 1974, nearly a year and a half prior to the Center's formal opening, has served the Cancer Surveillance System Biostatistics and the Cancer Prevention Research Program. In 1993, she began at HIVNET, which became the Statistical Center for HIV/AIDS Research and Prevention (SCHARP).

Nominators described her glowingly, in excerpts read during Tuesday's PHS All-Staff Meeting: "She often works beyond her duty. … She has a special talent in editing research proposals. … She lends her talent to PHS investigators outside her area of responsibility. … The only attitude you ever see in her is that there's a job to be done, and let's get it done with the highest integrity for the Hutch."

A tearful Glaefke told the gathering she was stunned at the recognition, particularly given that she had organized support for another nominee.

Winners are selected among PHS staff. It is named for the late first administrator of PHS. Awardees for 1995- 2001 were Norma Logan, Mary Potts, Carol Ure, Marci Wright, Nancy Sullivan and Cim Edelstein.
