The STAR of the show

Heather Hughes (right), recruitment coordinator for the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR), a National Cancer Institute;funded study conducted by the Hutch, shows Gay Thrush of Tukwila how to find lumps in a breast self-exam. The STAR study was among several exhibitors at the March 22-24 Northwest Women's Show at the Stadium Exhibition Hall. STAR offered free breast-cancer risk assessments to postmenopausal women 35 and over. "We did 30-40 assessments for each of the three days, but we talked to many more over the course of the show," Hughes said. "Most of the women we talked to required encouragement to conduct monthly self-exams, showing us that there still is a great need for this type of community health education." Those interested in finding out more information about the STAR study can call Joelle Machia at 206-667-6544.
