United, American to eliminate paper airline tickets by 2004

Brief
August 1, 2002

Following American Airlines' lead, this week United Airlines announced it is phasing out paper tickets.

United plans to stop issuing paper tickets for domestic trips by July 2003 and all other routes by January 2004.

Also, effective Aug. 1, United will charge $20 for all customer-requested paper tickets issued directly by the airline.

American, which doubled its paper ticket fee to $20 on June 24, will stop issuing paper tickets for domestic flights next March and will do the same for international routes by December 2003.

These fees do not apply when reservations are made using the center's travel agency, Navigant International/NW.
