Visa, green-card holders must have documents outside United States

It is important for visa and green-card holders to carry proper immigration documents when traveling outside of the United States with the intent of returning.
Because of heightened security at airports and borders, there is more scrutiny of foreign nationals coming into the United States. It is advisable that visa and green-card holders request an employment-verification letter to serve as added documentation of good standing.
If the end date of your visa-identification page in your passport has expired, you must secure a new visa stamp at a U.S. consulate before returning to the United States. This applies even if you've received a change of visa status within the United States. Before traveling outside of the United States, consider:

H1-Bs must carry their original Form I-797A, notice of approval. INS and State Department officials will not accept photocopies. If your notice is kept in your immigration file in Human Resources, pick it up before you leave the United States.

J-1s are required to carry all of their DS-2019 and/or IAP-66 forms. Be sure that there is a recent endorsement on the backside of either form.

F-1 CPT/OPTs must check re-entry eligibility with their EAD/Form I-20-sponsoring academic institutions.

If a green card is pending, contact your attorney to confirm whether you need advanced-parole documents.

Those limited to one or two U.S. entries should track the number of entries already used.
