Construction of PHS building prompts street closure, revised access to visitor lot, parking garage

By CLAY EALS

Those working at - and traveling to and from - the Hutch's Day Campus have become used to constant construction activity and traffic revisions for more than a decade.

But some of the most challenging traffic rerouting of the campus development began this month and will continue through March 2004, when the new Public Health Sciences Division building opens.

The traffic changes affect automotive routes around the PHS building site and particularly will modify how vehicles get to the Thomas Building visitor-parking lot.

Starting last week, access to the lot was limited to traffic traveling north on Yale Avenue North from Aloha Street (see map, above right). Access to Fairview Avenue North or Ward Street from Yale northbound was cut off.

Access to the Weintraub/Thomas faculty-staff is now available from Fairview only, going southbound on Yale. In addition, there is no through access in either direction on Yale between Fairview and Aloha.

Then, on Monday, Feb. 4, the rerouting will change again (see map at lower right).

At that time, access to the Thomas Building visitor lot and the Weintraub/Thomas garage for faculty and staff will be from southbound only from Fairview through a new visitor lot that will be converted from what is now Yale Avenue North. Yale between Ward and Aloha will be closed permanently.

Scott Rusch, director of Facilities, said that while the revisions may be inconvenient and temporarily confusing, in two years they will give way to an entrance that signifies "the heart of the campus."

The reconfiguration will create a new "front door" for the Hutchinson Center that will be clearer and more inviting for visitors, Rusch said.

"It'll look more like a private campus setting, as opposed to just a street," he said.
