Dr. Peter Horn, research associate in Dr. Hans-Peter Kiem's Clinical Research Division laboratory, is the recipient of the Dirk van Bekkum New Investigator Award.
The $500 award was presented at the annual meeting of the International Society for Experimental Hematology July 5-9 in Montreal.
Horn's research focuses on identifying modified viruses that can be used effectively for gene therapy in animal models.
Such viruses ultimately may be engineered to contain potentially therapeutic genes that are transferred into hematopoietic stem cells, which give rise to the blood and immune system. Horn presented results of his work at the meeting.
The Society, which consists of more than 1,400 members from around the world, seeks to create a forum for the presentation and discussion of pre-clinical data in experimental hematology and is dedicated to the promotion of cutting-edge science.
