Longtime facilities volunteer 'Pete' Peterson dies at 78

June 20, 2002

Harold "Pete" Peterson, a volunteer for the Facilities Engineering Department for the past 10 years, died Tuesday following a heart attack last week. He was 78.

Volunteering three to four hours a day, three days a week, Peterson served as a friend and mentor to Facilities Engineering staff, helping the department to keep up with the rapid pace of construction, said Bob Cowan, department manager.

"Whether managing the plans-and-drawing room, filing operations and maintenance manuals or identifying and labeling equipment, Pete had good ideas and was always a positive contributor," Cowan said.

Peterson formerly managed facilities engineering at Doctors Hospital and Virginia Mason Medical Center and was trained as a mechanical engineer at the University of Washington. He was a retired Marine colonel who served in the Pacific during World War II and was an avid skier.

He also was active in the annual Marines Toys for Tots drive and was a founder of the Washington State Society for Healthcare Engineering, serving as an officer for that organization during the last 10 years. He is survived by his wife Louise and three children.
