Digging for gold for out-of-town patients

Brief
June 6, 2002

Olympic gold medalist Apolo Ohno helps break ground for the new Ronald McDonald House May 29 in Seattle. When completed, it will be the second house in the area, providing a home away from home for families of seriously ill children being treated at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. Many patients served by Ronald McDonald House are bone-marrow transplant recipients on Fred Hutchinson protocols.

Pat McDonald, executive director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington, said the new house will open in the fall of 2003.

Others who helped celebrate the groundbreaking included Karen Moyer, Fred Hutchinson Foundation board member; Sue Albrecht, chair of the board for Children's; and Sally Behnke, founding board member of Ronald McDonald House and the Fred Hutchinson Foundation. (Photo by Davis Freeman)
