The city of Seattle and the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce have officially named the center as among the BEST (Businesses for an Environmentally Sustainable Tomorrow).
The center received two "BEST green" awards - for energy conservation and environmental leadership - last month from the city and the chamber. For the latter award, the center tied with Julia's Restaurant, 300 Broadway Ave. E.
Other categories and their winners were Aaron's Bicycle Repair for waste prevention and recycling; the Port of Seattle Landscape Department for water conservation; Pirelli Jacobson Inc. for stormwater-pollution prevention; Mithun for sustainable building; and Albertson's Food and Drug for innovation.
The awards recognize businesses that adopt environmentally sustainable practices and encourage other organizations to improve their environmental performance.
"The BEST awards are proof that what's good for the environment is also good for business," said Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. "The city and the private sector are partners in the effort to conserve resources and prevent pollution. I'm proud of the work of our business community to protect and sustain the environment."
Steve Leahy, president and CEO of the chamber, chimed in.
"The winners remind us that the environment is everyone's business, and that there are cost-effective ways for every company to make a difference," he said.
