The deadline is approaching for applicants for "diversity" visas - the 50,000 permanent resident visas issued annually to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Entries for a lottery for such visas must be received by noon Wednesday, Nov. 6. Applicants must meet strict rules.
Natives of Canada, mainland China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea, the United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam are ineligible to apply because those nations sent a total of more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the last five years.
Those born in Taiwan and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao are eligible.
