Deadlines are approaching for applicants for "diversity" visas - the 50,000 permanent resident visas issued annually to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Entries for a lottery for such visas must be received by noon Monday, Oct. 7, and noon Wednesday, Nov. 6. Applicants must meet strict rules. Natives of Canada, mainland China, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea, the United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam are ineligible to apply because those nations sent a total of more than 50,000 immigrants to the United States in the last five years. Those born in Taiwan and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao are eligible. For applications and more information, visit http://www.fhcrc.org/admin/hr/immig/.
Are you a foreign national who has moved recently? The Immigration and Naturalization Service requires you to notify the INS within 10 days of such a change. Also, foreign nationals who have moved at any time since initially entering the United States should file a notification form immediately. Failure to give such notice is punishable by $200, 30 days in jail, deportation and a bar to re-entry. Download an address-change form at: http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/ar-11.htm.
