A gift with lasting impact

Brief

Ed Fritzky (left), former chair and chief executive officer of Immunex and a new Amgen board member, presents a $200,000 check to Dr. Lee Hartwell, center president and director, in July when Amgen acquired Immunex. Aimed at supporting training of young researchers, the gift will be repeated during the next four years. Also present were Doug Williams (second from left), senior vice president for basic research in Seattle; and Dave Mann, former Immunex chief financial officer. Half the money will go to interdisciplinary fellowships for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers interested in combining two or more complementary disciplines. The other half will go to fellowships in the center's four scientific divisions, with recipients to be known as Amgen fellows. Immunex and Amgen management said the gift will strengthen the ties between Fred Hutchinson and scientists at the Amgen Washington site. Two former center scientists launched Immunex in Seattle in 1987. Previous gifts from the firm to the center have totaled more than $400,000. Amgen, founded in 1980 and headquartered in Thousand Oaks, Calif., is the world's largest biotechnology company with 9,250 employees. PHOTO BY TODD McNAUGHT
