Catch a Cure for Cancer Day Aug. 17 supports center, Moyer Foundation efforts
In honor of a former patient, The Moyer Foundation and Fred Hutchinson this summer launched The Gregory Fund to support the center's early detection cancer research.
The first big promotion for the fund is Catch a Cure for Cancer Day, Aug. 17, which features a series of events to raise money, including a 12-hour radiothon on KOMO 1000 News, promotions at a Seattle Mariners baseball game and a celebrity-waiter dinner and auction.
Catch a Cure for Cancer Day sponsors include KOMO 1000 News, the Seattle Mariners, Fox Sports Net Northwest and Union Square Grill.
The Moyer Foundation also is sponsoring a large banner promoting The Gregory Fund at Safeco Field for the entire Mariners season. And earlier this year, the foundation publicly announced the fund before a Mariners game. Dr. John Potter, director of the Public Health Sciences Division, attended the ceremony to receive a $25,000 donation from Schwartz Brothers Restaurants, which made the gift in honor of co-founder John Schwartz, who died earlier this year after a long fight with multiple myeloma.
Baseball star Jamie Moyer and his wife, Karen, founded The Moyer Foundation in 2000 to support children and families in times of difficulty. They named The Gregory Fund for leukemia survivor and family friend Gregory Chaya, whose life was saved by a bone-marrow transplant at the center.
