Torok-Storb garners award for educational outreach efforts

Dr. Beverly Torok-Storb, an investigator in the Clinical Research Division, is the recipient of the 2003 Exemplary Service Award from the American Society of Hematology (ASH). The society recognized Torok-Storb for her efforts to organize a yearly student symposium that takes place in conjunction with the organization’s annual meeting.

In 1995, Torok-Storb and a team of researchers from the Clinical Research Division began offering hands-on laboratory activities and scientific lectures for about 400 students in the host city for the society’s meeting. The annual ASH Student Symposium served as the prototype for the center’s Hutch High event, which annually brings Washington state students to Fred Hutchinson to study biomedical research. Hutch High is supported by an endowment established by the Samuel and Althea Stroum Foundation.

Torok-Storb will receive the Exemplary Service Award during the President’s Dinner at the Dec. 5 ASH meeting in San Diego.
