Statistical expert Efron here Jan. 30

Dr. Bradley Efron, professor of statistics and biostatistics at Stanford University, will deliver a talk entitled "Bayesians, Frequentists, and Microbiologists" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, in Pelton Auditorium. His presentation is part of the interdisciplinary Perspectives in Science seminar series.

Efron is one of the world's leading statisticians, with a particular focus on computationally intensive methods of statistical inference. He was named a MacArthur Prize Fellow in 1983 and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences.

Although his writing has included technical treatments, he also has emphasized the philosophical nature of statistical inference and will discuss this in his seminar.

Refreshments will be offered outside Pelton at 4 p.m. A reception will follow the seminar in the Double Helix Caf?.
