Health-care disparities conference Oct. 18 to explore barriers to minority participation in clinical trials

Fred Hutchinson, along with the University of Washington, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and the UW Breast Program, will co-sponsor "Reducing Cancer Disparities: Meeting the Needs of the Community," from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at Bell Harbor Convention Center in Seattle.
The conference will promote awareness of cancer disparities faced by underserved populations and will include panel presentations with representatives from diverse ethnic and racial groups as well as perspectives from cancer-health professionals, researchers and patients. Participants can expect to gain awareness of the racial and ethnic cancer disparities faced by minority and medically underserved populations to learn strategies for increasing participation of minority and underserved populations in clinical trials for cancer prevention and treatment.

u Dr. Brian Smedley, Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Sciences, "Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care."
u Dr. Lisa Newman, University of Michigan, "African-American Women and Breast Cancer."
u Dr. Otis Brawley, Emory University, "Cancer Disparities in Clinical Trials."
Attendees, including social workers, are eligible to receive continuing medical education credits. The registration fee is $95 for allied health professionals and $115 for M.D.s, Ph.D.s and D.O.s.
