Spencer Lemons, a technology transfer specialist with more than 10 years of experience in the field, will join the center Aug. 9 as the new vice president of Industry Relations and Technology Licensing.

Lemons comes from Wake Forest University Health Sciences, where he has served as director of the Office of Technology Asset Management since 1999. Under his direction, annual licensing revenues increased from $2.9 million to $32 million.

Previously, Lemons served as associate director of technology transfer at North Carolina State University. He has also been a high-school science teacher and a medical-laboratory supervisor.

Peggy Means, senior vice president for strategic planning, said that Lemons was the search committee's unanimous first choice. "Spencer has a strong track record in facilitating the development of discoveries into products that benefit the public, via both licensing and startups," she said. "He will also play a pivotal role in brokering relationships with industry. We are all very pleased he is joining us."

Lemons will oversee the Technology Transfer Office, which manages the transfer of intellectual property and proprietary materials developed at Fred Hutchinson to companies and is responsible for all activities that contribute to technology licensing. He also will establish and oversee partnerships between the center and industry.
