King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden presented the 2004 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine to Dr. Linda Buck on Dec. 10 at the annual Nobel ceremony in Stockholm. Buck received the prize for her landmark research on the sense of smell. She discovered a family of proteins that detect odors and how they relay signals to the brain.
