The Fred Hutchinson Community Outreach Program has named the first two recipients of its inaugural Community Action Award: Seattle kidney specialist Dr. Bessie Young and Safeway Inc. The award was established to honor individuals and organizations that go beyond the scope of their normal duties to improve health-care access and education and to reduce health-care disparities.
Young, a nephrologist with Northwest Kidney Centers and researcher at Veteran’s Administration Hospital, was honored for addressing kidney disease in the African-American community.
Safeway was recognized for its support of hunger relief, education, and health and human services. Safeway recently donated $200,000 to breast-cancer research at the center.
The awards were presented at a Dec. 6 community breakfast featuring speaker Dr. Marilyn Gaston, former Assistant U.S. Surgeon General.
