Baseball fans and center supporters will celebrate the spirit of America's favorite pastime and the legacy of Fred Hutchinson at the annual Hutch Award Luncheon on Jan. 26 at Safeco Field. Baseball luminaries participating in the festivities include 2003 Hutch Award winner Jamie Moyer of the Seattle Mariners and keynote speaker Dusty Baker of the Chicago Cubs.
Moyer, who won a Mariner record 21 games and received his first All-Star selection last season, won baseball's most prestigious off-field award earlier this year, the Roberto Clemente Award for humanitarian commitment. Moyer and his wife, Karen, have raised more than $3 million through their Moyer Foundation for children's causes and cancer research. They are longtime Fred Hutchinson supporters and last year helped launch the center's Gregory Fund® for early cancer detection. Their foundation has donated more than $200,000 to the fund so far.
Established in 1965, the Hutch Award, salutes a major-leaguer who exemplifies the honor, courage and dedication of winning pitcher, World Series manager and center namesake, Fred Hutchinson. Previous winners include Jason Giambi, Curt Schilling, Joe Torre, Willie Stargell, Lou Brock, Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle.
Luncheon tickets are a suggested minimum donation of $150. All proceeds benefit Fred Hutchinson's Gregory Fund for early cancer detection research. For more information, contact Eileen Sullivan at 206-667-4149 or esulliva@fhcrc.org.
