High school science fair judges needed for March 18 Biotech Expo

Brief
March 4, 2004

Center postdocs, grad students and other scientific staff are needed to serve as judges for the 2004 Student Biotech Expo on Thursday, March 18 at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. Judges are needed to evaluate high school student projects in the categories of art, career/industry, drama, electronic media, histology, molecular modeling, music, research, teaching, creative writing and expository writing.

The expo draws together high school students from Seattle-area biology, biotechnology and molecular biology classes and allows them to present their work to each other and to the public. A key element of the expo is to pair each student with a community mentor who has expertise in the student's area of interest. Several center scientists serve as mentors for students taking part in this year's event.

Judges will provide project feedback to a designated group of students. Each student will receive brief written comments from a judge. In addition, each student will have the opportunity to talk with a judge during the expo.

Judges can expect to spend two to three hours reviewing projects and providing feedback and three and a half hours prejudging projects beginning at 2 p.m. on March 8 at Amgen's Seattle campus. Judges are expected to attend the expo from 8 a.m. until at least 1 p.m. on March 18. Lunch will be provided.

To sign up or request more information, contact Jeanne Chowning, expo manager, at jchowning@nwabr.org or 206-956-3647.
