Ten human-research ethics committee members from seven African countries attended a networking session hosted by the Institutional Review Office and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network on Oct. 27 at the center.
The session was part of an ongoing collaboration between Fred Hutchinson research-ethics staff and their counterparts at institutions in Africa, which is dedicated to enhancing the research-ethics capacity of African institutions and to fostering productive research collaborations among the countries.
Other local institutions that took part in the meeting included the University of Washington, the Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The meeting was one of a series of activities funded by a Human Subjects Research Enhancement grant from the National Institutes of Health awarded to the center in 2003.
