Brief
The Science Education Partnership has received a three-year, $115,000 grant from the Amgen Foundation.
The funding will support the SEP’s popular kit loan program, which allows science teachers around the state to borrow materials to conduct molecular biology and other experiments in their classrooms. Such equipment and supplies are often prohibitively expensive for school budgets. Last year, 116 teachers and approximately 14,000 students used SEP kits.
SEP, a professional development program for Washington state high school and middle school science teachers, also hosts a summer program in which teachers are paired with mentor scientists and provides ongoing support during the school year. Dr. Nancy Hutchison directs the program.
Since 1991, the Amgen Foundation has made grants to advance science education, improve quality of care and access for patients, and support resources that create sound communities in which to live and work. SEP staff collaborated with staff from the Development Department in the writing and submission of the grant application.
