Mentors needed for April 1 high-school biotech expo fair

Brief

October 21, 2004

Share your enthusiasm for science with a high-school student by becoming a mentor for the Fifth Annual Student Biotech Expo, which will take place on April 1, 2005, at Amgen's Helix Campus in Seattle.

The event draws together high school students from Seattle-area biology, biotechnology and molecular biology classes and allows them to present their work to each other and to the public. Each student is matched with a community mentor who has experience in the student's area of interest. Student can present projects in a variety of forms — from art, drama, or music to molecular modeling, Web design or traditional scientific research.

Mentors will work with students prior to the expo by serving as a scientific/professional resource for student. This may include helping students formulate a topic, directing students to relevant information and helping them understand scientific concepts and terminology. Time commitments range from two to 20 hours, depending on the type of arrangement the mentor and student agree upon.

To learn more, visit the expo Web site, http://www.studentbiotech.org, or contact Dr. Julie Randolph-Habecker, staff scientist and manager of the Experimental Hematopathology shared resource, at jhabecke@fhcrc.org.
