Pilot funds are available for Consortium faculty members

Brief

August 4, 2005

Funds are available from the Hutchinson Center/University of Washington Cancer Consortium Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) to support cancer-related pilot projects. Faculty members from the Consortium are eligible to apply.

The pilot proposals should represent a new project or new research direction for the principal investigator, and one that is likely to provide preliminary data to seek outside funding. Grants from more established investigators (e.g., Full Members or Professors) are only likely to be competitive if they are for a pilot study that is needed to establish a new direction and/or research project, rather than a project that is an extension of ongoing well-established studies. New projects that forge new collaborations between investigators in different disciplines are encouraged.

Priority will be given to proposals that are of wide interest and impact to the Consortium; are interdisciplinary and/or that lead to new collaborations among investigators in the Consortium; and are highly innovative, yet technically feasible.

Of particular interest are proposals that address areas of research that will help advance the strategic goals of the Consortium (e.g., solid-tumor research, molecular profiling in population-based studies, quantitative biology, biomarker discovery with emphasis on early detection), but proposals in all areas of cancer-related research will be considered.

The pilot funds may be used to generate key preliminary results for applications for outside funding, or to provide a timely opportunity to test a new hypothesis that might otherwise be lost if delayed by the NIH review cycle.

In most cases, awards will be $40,000 in direct costs for a single year; indirect costs will be included in the awards in addition to this amount, at the institutional indirect cost rate. Applications are due by 4 p.m. on Sept. 9. The announcement of awards is expected in October. Funding will likely begin in October/November 2005 and end by Dec. 31, 2006.
