Mentors needed for high-school summer laboratory interns

Share your enthusiasm for science with a high-school student this summer! The Ballard High School Biotech Academy, a program that includes several teachers in the Science Education Partnership, seeks paid laboratory internships for students in the academy.

Students in the academy are enrolled in a rigorous curriculum and will have completed a genetics class including training in molecular biology. Because the student's internship participation is through a work-based learning program administered by Seattle Public Schools, the labor and industry rules that typically apply to minors in a lab setting are greatly minimized.

Internships must run for six to eight weeks, preferably between July 5 and Aug. 12. To learn more, or to talk to another center scientist who has mentored a Ballard student, contact Dr. Julie Randolph-Habecker, manager of the Experimental Hematopathology shared resource and an academy board member, at jhabecke@fhcrc.org.
