Brief
More than 900 baseball fans and cancer-research supporters gathered at Safeco Field to honor the memory of Major League player and manager Fred Hutchinson at a Jan. 19 luncheon celebrating the 40th annual Hutch Award. The audience — which included several baseball stars and relatives of center founder Dr. Bill Hutchinson — donated more than $230,000 to the center's Gregory Fund for early cancer-detection research.
San Diego Padres pitcher Trevor Hoffman, one of the baseball's premier relief pitchers, received the 2004 Hutch Award, which is presented each year to the player who best exemplifies Fred Hutchinson's honor, courage and dedication on and off the field. Hutchinson died of cancer in 1964. His brother, Bill, led the drive to establish a cancer research institution in his honor.
Also attending the luncheon were Hall of Fame pitcher and keynote speaker Jim Palmer and 2003 Hutch Award winner Jamie Moyer of the Seattle Mariners.
