Mary-Claire King elected to National Academy of Sciences

Dr. Mary-Claire King, a member of the Hutchinson Center/University of Washington Consortium Program in Breast Cancer Research and a UW professor of genetics, was one of 72 scientists elected on May 3 to the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Steve Henikoff of the Basic Sciences Division was also elected.

Membership honors distinguished, continuing achievements in original research.

In 1990, King proved the existence of the gene — BRCA1 — linked to many hereditary breast and ovarian cancers. Her current research includes investigating immune-response differences in HIV and mapping and cloning the gene for inherited deafness. She also applies genomic sequencing to the identification of victims of human-rights abuses worldwide.
