A symposium entitled, "Modeling in Chronic and Infectious Diseases: From Biology to Outcomes" will take place Friday, June 17, from noon to 5 p.m. in rooms M1-A303/305/307 in the Robert M. Arnold Building (Public Health Sciences Division). Presentations will be designed to be accessible to a multidisciplinary audience and will cover a variety of topics including modeling of brain-tumor dynamics, pandemic influenza, early detection of ovarian cancer and global health diagnostic needs. The PHS Executive Committee is sponsoring the meeting.
Topics and speakers include:
- "The Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modeling Network of the National Cancer Institute (NCI): Bringing Modelers Together to Explain Population Cancer Trends," Dr. Eric Feuer, NCI
- "Lung Cancer Carcinogenesis," Dr. Suresh Moolgavkar, PHS Division
- "Modeling Brain Tumor Dynamics," Dr. Kristin Swanson, University of Washington
- "Statistical and Mechanistic Interpretation of Cancer Survival Models," Dr. Alex Tsodikov, University of California, Davis
- "Dynamics of Tumor Cell Populations in Leukemia," Dr. Rob Deconde, PHS Division
- "Containing Pandemic Influenza at the Source: A Stochastic Modeling Approach," Dr. Ira Longini, Emory University
- "HIV and STIs in Social Networks," Dr. Martina Morris, UW
- "Analytically Determining Global Health Diagnostic Needs," Dr. Deborah Burgess, Gates Foundation
- "Outcomes of Early Detection for Ovarian Cancer," Dr. Martin McIntosh, PHS Division
- "Impact of a Preventive Intervention on Prostate Cancer Natural History: Results from the PCPT," Dr. Ruth Etzioni, PHS Division
