Brief
Gov. Christine Gregoire and other dignitaries visited the Hutchinson Center May 12 for a bill-signing ceremony to create the Life Sciences Discovery Fund. The fund will use $350 million in tobacco-settlement funds, along with matching non-state funds, to support leading-edge research throughout Washington to cure debilitating diseases and improve the quality and yield of agricultural crops.
Speakers at the standing-room-only ceremony included the Center's Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, who provided opening remarks; former Washington Gov. Gary Locke; Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and University of Washington president Dr. Mark Emmert, among others.
