General Article
May is National Bike Month. In celebration, Fred Hutchinson, the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Cascade Bicycle Club (www.cascade.org) invite staff to bicycle to work on Friday, May 20. The ride ends with food and prizes at the Transportation Department's commute station in the traffic circle in front of the Robert M. Arnold Building (PHS).
To refill energy tanks, the commute station will be stocked with coffee and pastries provided by the new Grand Central Bakery store (located at 1616 Eastlake Ave. E.). Riders can also pick up orange slices and yogurt, fruit and granola parfaits, and receive a T-shirt and water bottle to commemorate their participation.
Commute challenge
Bike month activities include the "2005 Group Health Commute Challenge!" competition (www.cascade.org/Education/btw/cc.cfm). Teams of four to 10 riders are now forming. For more information, send an e-mail to hjoost@fhcrc.org. Commute five or more round-trips during May and become eligible for numerous prizes.
Readiness to ride
Prepare for Bike to Work Day and the commute challenge by attending a bicycle maintenance workshop Friday, May 6, in the Arnold building conference room, M1-A303, between noon and 2 p.m. Light snacks and beverages will be provided.
All who attend the workshop can enter a drawing for 10 free bicycle tune-ups and 10 complimentary coupons from Eastlake's Grand Central Bakery. Dean Sabol from Pedal Dynamics will be available to answer your questions and provide handouts on bicycle maintenance. Find out how to adjust brakes, lubricate a drive train, adjust derailleurs and more. Sabol will also provide a discount tune-up coupon to all attendees. For additional information, call Don Fisher, transportation coordinator, at (206) 667-5064.
