PHS all-staff focuses on funding, faculty and genetic epidemiology
Faculty and staff of the Public Health Sciences Division attended the division's all-staff meeting on Oct. 26. The gathering featured a scientific presentation by Dr. Neli Ulrich, associate member of the Cancer Prevention Program. Ulrich shared insights from her genetic epidemiology studies while emphasizing lifestyle factors that influence disease risk.
Dr. John Potter, PHS director, highlighted recent and future division developments, including:
- Recognition of Robert M. Arnold's $15 million gift and the renaming of the division's building in his honor
- 91 new grants worth $18 million in total costs since April 2005
- 341 active grants and contracts
- 300 grants currently submitted
- New or upcoming faculty appointments, including Drs. Ira Longini, Elizabeth Halloran, Pei Wang and Sunil Hingorani (a Clinical Research Division recruit with a joint appointment and laboratory in PHS)
- Current faculty recruitment for a laboratory scientist in ovarian-cancer early detection, a computational biologist and a nutrition-intervention researcher
- Development of two new division programs, Computational Biology and Molecular Diagnostics, and intention to create an international research program
- All staff are invited to the PHS holiday party, Dec. 19, 2-5 p.m., in the Arnold Building atrium
- Acknowledgment of Division Administrator Lawrie Robertson, departing Dec. 1, for his support and dedication; farewell party details are forthcoming.
