Fulbright scholar visits epidemiology

Brief

August 17, 2006

With its international reputation as a cutting-edge research institution, the Center attracts high-caliber scientists from around the world. One such scientist is Fulbright senior scholar Dr. David Whiteman, visiting from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Brisbane, Australia.

Whiteman is working with Dr. Thomas Vaughan in the Epidemiology group, studying esophageal cancers. One of two Australians to receive the prestigious Fulbright Senior Scholar Award, Whiteman said he hopes to promote a mutually beneficial and ongoing relationship between his home-research group in Australia and researchers at the Center.

"What we're aiming to achieve back home is the same type of big picture, multi-disciplinary research that's being done here," Whiteman said. His research interests also include skin cancer, melanoma and ovarian cancer. He is hoping to take knowledge of esophageal cancers home, but leave behind some insight about skin cancers. Whiteman will be part of the epidemiology group until mid-October.
