New SCCA Cancer Prevention Clinic scheduled to open in September

A new Seattle Cancer Care Alliance clinic that will provide state-of-the-art cancer early detection, risk assessment and counseling services for Western Washington residents is schedule to open September 22. The Cancer Prevention Clinic, which will be located on the fourth floor of the SCCA outpatient clinic, will offer care to any individual concerned about his or her risk of cancer.

Each client will receive a comprehensive evaluation from a team of physicians trained and certified in cancer prevention and other prevention specialists, including dietitians and physical therapists. The team will develop a personalized cancer-risk assessment and risk-reduction program, with ongoing follow-up, for each individual.

In addition to offering cancer-prevention care, the clinic will provide an efficient infrastructure for recruiting individuals to Hutchinson Center studies on the causes, early detection and prevention of cancer. The Cancer Prevention Clinic is distinct from the Prevention Center, a research facility in the Arnold Building that was established to help scientists investigate the causes, progression, control, treatment and prevention of disease through studies that often involve volunteer participants.

Dr. Scott Ramsey, a health-care economist and physician in the Public Health Sciences Division, is director of the new Cancer Prevention Clinic. Marian Johnson, a research dietitian and project nutritionist who has worked for more than 15 years in the Clinical Research and PHS divisions, is the clinic's coordinator.
