Brief

February 2, 2006

Banks Warden, a health-care management expert with more than 30 years of experience in hospital and medical-research management, is the new vice president of planning and strategic development.

His responsibilities include long-range strategic planning for the Center and communicating the plans to the institution and its partners. Warden will work with Dr. Lee Hartwell, president and director; Myra Tanita, chief operating officer; division directors; trustees and senior leaders to develop and maintain strategic plans for the Center. He will supervise planning staff; the director of the Research Trials Office; the strategic initiative administrators for early detection, solid tumors and global health; and the practice plan administrator.

Warden most recently served as chief operating officer of the Hutchinson Center-based HIV Vaccine Trials Network, which conducts clinical trials of AIDS vaccines in partnership with institutions in twelve countries on four continents. There, he oversaw the network's business operations and administration. As part of these activities he led the planning and implementation of negotiation, contracting and budgeting systems that are considered models for National Institutes of Health clinical-trial networks. Warden has also been a senior vice president at Premera Blue Cross in Seattle and chief executive officer of Pacific Medical Center. In addition, he was the founder and served as president/chief executive officer of Warden Consulting, a company specializing in operational and marketing analysis and strategic planning for healthcare organizations.

Myra Tanita, chief operating officer of the Center, said that Warden brings exceptional skills to the position.

"Banks has extensive experience in health care, clinical trials, global health and superb leadership qualities — skills that make him an outstanding person for the job. We are all very excited to have him on board."
