Brief
The University of Washington School of Medicine presents a lecture with Dr. Susan F. Wood from 2 to 3 p.m., Feb. 10, in the UW's Hogness Auditorium, A-420, in the Health Sciences Building.
Dr. Wood, former assistant commissioner for Women's Health and former director, Office of Women's Health at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will speak on the importance of science and medical evidence in health policy decision-making by federal health agencies. The lecture, entitled "Women's Health: Emergency Contraception and the FDA," will be simultaneously televised in the following locations:
Sponsors for this event include the School of Public Health and Community Medicine and the Hutchinson Center.
At the FDA, Wood directed the Office of Women's Health where she focused on areas such as the inclusion of women in clinical studies; regulatory research on topics such as cardiovascular disease and medications used during pregnancy; developing outreach campaigns for women regarding menopausal hormone therapy; safe medication use and diabetes. Wood has been featured in numerous broadcast and print outlets. She was interviewed on Nightlight by Ted Koppel and appeared on The Diane Rehm Show on National Public Radio. In print, Wood has appeared in Time, Newsweek, New Republic, and more than 30 newspapers across the country.
Wood resigned her position at the FDA last August in protest of the agency's decision to delay giving over-the-counter status to Plan B emergency contraception.
