June 15, 2006

Bhavna Chohan, a member of Dr. Julie Overbaugh's lab in the Human Biology Division, was selected for the Gilbert S. Omenn Graduate Student Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Washington's School of Public Health and Community Medicine. Chohan received the honor, which included an unrestricted award of $2,500, at a June 9 ceremony at the UW.

As a graduate research assistant, Chohan studies HIV infection. She and Overbaugh first met in 1993 in Kenya, where both were involved with HIV/AIDS research. Chohan has worked for the Center since 2001 while pursuing doctoral studies at the UW International AIDS Research and Training Program.

The endowed annual award is named after a former UW dean who led the public-health program for 15 years.
