Center, NMSU issue call for collaborative project proposals

Center researchers seek proposals for collaborative projects with researchers at New Mexico State University (NMSU) that meet the needs of ethnically underserved populations. Proposals are due Oct. 23.

To address ethnic disparities in cancer incidence and mortality, the National Cancer Institutes (NCI) initiated a Minority Institution Cancer Center Partnership Program. In 2002, the program awarded the Center and NMSU a five-year planning grant to conduct collaborative pilot projects to correct cancer-care disparities. Now the Building Minority Cancer Research Capacity study partners seek to expand their collaboration by applying for a comprehensive U54 grant to the NCI and issuing the call for project proposals.

Any faculty member at the Center is eligible to apply. All funded projects must have a minimum of two co-principal investigators: one from the Hutchinson Center, the other from NMSU. All projects must also have an explicit professional development plan for junior personnel.

Details about potential collaborating scientists, examples of funded pilot projects and application forms can be found at www.fhcrc.org/science/bmrcp or cancer.nmsu.edu. For more information, contact Dr. Beti Thompson, program director, at (206) 667-4673, bthompso@fhcrc.org or Jennifer Hymer, project coordinator, at (206) 667-7480.
