Science and race documentary concludes April 6

April 2007

The Diversity Council's Village Voice presents the third and final episode in the documentary series, "Race: The Power of an Illusion," Friday, April 6, noon-1:30 p.m. in Pelton Auditorium. The documentary explores how recent scientific discoveries have toppled the concept of biological race.

Episode three, "The House We Live In," is the first film about race to focus not on individual attitudes and behavior but on the ways our institutions and policies provide advantages to some groups at the expense of others. Its subject is the "unmarked" race: Caucasians. The film shows how benefits quietly and often invisibly accrue to Caucasian people, not necessarily because of merit or hard work, but because of the racialized nature of laws, courts, customs and housing in the United States.

A short facilitated discussion will follow the film.

Village Voice presentations will continue May 11 and June 1. For more information about the series, contact Dr. Karen Peterson at kpeterso@fhcrc.org. To learn more about the documentary, visit www.pbs.org/race/000_General/000_00-Home.xml.
