Gates Foundation funds available for global-health pilot projects

Puget Sound Partners for Global Health announces the availability of awards for pilot projects in global health. The organization defines "global health" as diseases and/or health conditions that have both a larger burden in the developing world and have received inequitable attention.

Funding is available for up to $75,000, which includes indirect expenses. Projects should be one year in duration. Preference will be given to new research directions, investigators who are not now working on global-health issues and/or new research collaborations.

How to apply

To apply, visit http://depts.washington.edu/pspgh for an application and submit a short research plan (four pages maximum). Applications must be submitted electronically by April 13, 2007.

To be eligible, the PI must be a faculty member at a nonprofit research institution in King County. Previously funded projects will not be considered. Preference will be given to PIs who have not previously received funding from this source. Notification of awards will be in early June with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2007.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation formed Puget Sound Partners for Global Health in 2003 and contributed $500,000 for pilot-project funding. This is the fifth year of funding for global-health research.
