Drs. Xiaolan Ye and Michael Petrascheck co-authored a study with Dr. Linda Buck in which they took a chemical approach to the study of aging in adult roundworms. The scientists focused on the antidepressant mianserin, which can extend the life of C. elegans by 30 percent. How mianserin works is not yet known, but it appears the drug mimics the effects of caloric restriction, which retards aging in a variety of animals.
