The aluminum, steel and glass "Vessel" is scheduled for completion by year-end.

Fencing will go up around the Arnold Building traffic circle June 7 in preparation of the site for the creation of the Center's towering landmark sculpture, "Vessel." Following excavation, construction of planter walls, benches, the sculpture base wall walkway and irrigation and electrical work will take place through July.

There will be a break in construction for the Center picnic. Artist Ed Carpenter will begin assembling the towering sculpture after Labor Day.

Chosen after weeks of consideration by the art selection committee and employee input, the four-story aluminum, steel and glass sculpture, will illuminate at night and feature an open design that invites pedestrians into its center.

The Portland-based Carpenter is an internationally acclaimed artist with pieces commissioned in Ireland, Australia, Taiwan, Japan and many locations across the United States. "Vessel" is specifically designed to mirror the mission and goals of the Center. Carpenter writes, "This monumental but delicate sculpture employs light to represent the optimistic spirit of the institution."

The sculpture was made possible thanks to a generous gift from the family of a former Center faculty member who cites the importance of a work environment that spawns scientific creativity. The family specified its donation for the creation of outdoor art.
