System gives visitors easy access to Internet while keeping Center safe

As a world-class medical research institution, the Hutchinson Center holds conferences throughout the year and regularly welcomes visiting scholars. In the past, it has been impossible for visitors to use the Center's main wireless network because it was intended for secure access only and requires a valid HutchNet ID to connect. Best security practices mandate guests should not be connected directly to an organization's network. In fact, in more than one instance, a visitor's infected laptop has spread viruses to Center computers.

To give visitors easy access to the Internet while protecting Center systems, Information Technology has implemented a guest wireless network. The new network, called FHCRC Guest, is separate from the Center's corporate network and gives guests direct access to the Internet. Should a guest attempt to access any Center systems, it will be as if he or she is coming from somewhere on the Internet outside of the Center. The guest wireless network is only available for official business.

Before a guest can use FHCRC Guest, he or she must be registered. To make this as easy as possible, anyone with a valid HutchNet ID may register guests by using a computer on the Center's network and pointing a Web browser to https://guestreg.fhcrc.org. The employee then enters his or her HutchNet ID and password and on a subsequent page provides the guest's user ID and password (both of the employee's choosing), the guest's home e-mail address, and the employee's e-mail address. The guest may then connect to FHCRC Guest, open a Web browser, and present the assigned user ID and password.

Each registration will grant guest-wireless access for seven days, regardless of the duration of the guest's stay. After seven days, the user ID and password will automatically expire. Re-registration is required for longer access.

The guest wireless network is compatible with Microsoft, Mac OS X, and Linux operating systems.
