Dr. Norman Greenberg of the Clinical Research Division recently released a test version of his software, MyMouseHouse, for managing research-animal colonies. Working with the Center's Industry Relations and Technology Transfer Office, Greenberg is making this version available to federally funded investigators in the United States and Canada. A commercial version of the software is planned after the testing phase is complete.
The software emerged from Greenberg's experience in managing large colonies of genetically engineered mouse models. He found many researchers shared his desire for a better, easier way to manage day-to-day operations of animal colonies, reduce costs, prepare accurate inventories and reports, and keep screening, weaning and breeding schedules current to facilitate the planning and performance of research studies. He worked with a software developer from 2004 to 2006 to create the current version of his database-management system.
"Ultimately, the goal is to provide a better resource to the global community that we hope will hasten preclinical biomedical research involving important genetically engineered animal systems," Greenberg said.
