March 12 symposium examines infectious agents and cancer

Center scientists, along with other leading researchers, will present "Infectious Agents and Cancer: Approaches to Detect New Associations," Monday, March 12, 1-5 p.m. in Sze conference rooms.

Since nearly 20 percent of the worldwide burden of cancer is known to have an infectious etiology, it is likely that additional cancers may be due to infection with the viruses or bacteria already known to be associated with cancers, or that new infectious agents will be found to be associated with cancer. Understanding these associations will provide opportunities for prevention, early detection and treatment.

This symposium, organized by Drs. Lee Hartwell and Denise Galloway, will focus on methodologic approaches to look for new agents, and epidemiologic approaches to look for cancers that might have an infectious origin. Speakers include Dr. Eric Engels, National Cancer Institute; Dr. Joe DeRisi, University of California, San Francisco; Washington University's Dr. David Wang; and Center and University of Washington researchers.
